What’s Your Letters to God Story?
April 14, 2010

Each day we hear story after story of someone whose life was touched by the film, Letters to God. Each one is an answer to prayer.
Our intention from the beginning was that Letters to God would carry the message of hope to people in all walks of life. We felt that Tyler’s story and the story of his family battling cancer would be familiar to many. Also easy to identify with is Brady, a guy who finds himself without hope and nowhere to turn. There is someone for everyone to identify with in Letters to God.
Day after day someone tells us that they went home after the movie and wrote a letter to God. You can read a sampling of some of the letters people have posted on our site. One girl told us that she and all her friends have started writing letters to God. Her grandfather is building them a mailbox! Regardless of the age, one way people have responded to Letters to God is to start talking to God!
Others have told us that after watching Letters to God they took a close look at their life and decided to make some changes. One individual on Facebook told us after watching Brady in the movie that he realized he has a problem with alcohol.
Many moviegoers are touched by the valiant way Tyler battles cancer. Parents and family members are reminded of those they love that have fought cancer in such a courageous manner. In some cases, Letters to God, extends their loved ones legacy.
Hope Houchins, of Hannah’s Hope Ministries, talks about her reaction to Letters to God, “Letters to God, was very inspiring. The tag line, “Hope is contagious” is especially appropriate for the story, as well as life. Being the aunt of Hannah Sobeski, a young cancer patient who, like Tyler, had her hope anchored in an eternal relationship with Jesus Christ, I was encouraged to see that hope so beautifully portrayed and boldly stated on the big screen.” Hope felt that the writers of Letters to God accurately portrayed the struggles families experience when battling cancer.

At age seventeen, Hope’s niece, Hannah Sobeski was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of sarcoma cancer. Hannah was grounded in her faith before her storm of cancer hit. She knew where her hope rested, and it was not in her circumstances. Hannah fought hard for her life and she did not give up easily. Hannah never lost hope, she never lost her faith. As Hannah’s physical body wasted away, her faith and love for Christ grew. “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Cancer lost its hold on Hannah exactly six months from the day she was diagnosed. Hannah went to heaven on November 6, 2006.
Hope and her family share a similarity with Patrick Doughtie, writer and real life dad whose son’s life inspired Letters to God, they found a way to make their loved one life inspire others. Hannah’s testimony of faith and unwavering hope in Jesus Christ were so compelling, her family and friends founded Hannah’s Hope Ministries. The mission of Hannah’s Hope Ministries is to provide hope to individuals and families in life crisis, whether that life crisis is cancer, divorce, addiction, or simply the challenge of a young person living in today’s culture.
