BRINGING HOPE TO NASHVILLE

May 14, 2010

Flood

For most of us life consists of getting up every morning, figuring out what to have for breakfast and heading off to work or school.  But for our friends and family in Nashville life is much more complex and filled with questions that beg to have answers.

While news coverage of the flooding in Nashville is diminishing, the challenges and struggles of our Nashville neighbors are still mounting.  Patrick Doughtie, writer, co-director of Letters to God and Nashville resident tells us his family was fortunate.  They only had 6-8” of water in their basement and only some of their things were ruined.  Others have much more to work through. “We look around to see so many others who had no flood insurance because it wasn't available to them (due to not being in a flood zone,) families who have lost their entire home, belongings, clothes and cars.”

Patrick told us about a single mom, out of work, who lost all of her family’s belongings, their home, and their car.  People, including Patrick’s family, are trying to help this mom find a job, they have loaned her a car and found her a temporary home.  Local schools, churches and the Red Cross are reaching out to help Nashville families rebuild.  We wanted to make you aware of one opportunity that you can be involved in, to bring hope to this community. Grace Baptist Church of Nashville, Tyler Doughtie’s church, the boy who inspired Letters to God, is putting Bags of Hope.  These bags are filled with every day essential items that will temporarily ease some of a family’s burden.   In addition to items like toothpaste and shampoo, each bag will include the book Prayer: Your Own Letter To God or Dear God, both books inspired by the movie Letters to God and written by Patrick’s pastor, André K. Dugger.  You can contribute to the Bags of Hope through Grace Baptist.  Your donations and prayers are much appreciated. You can also contribute to the Red Cross, an amazing organization right there in the midst of struggling people.

Hope is contagious!  It is up to us to be a part of God’s plan.
